Super Ants! Picture Scientists are warning that America could be invaded this winter by massive swarms of cold-resistant super ants! The rapidly breeding creatures, formally known as Lasius neglectus, can withstand temperatures as low as 20 degrees F. What's worse, they're sociable - they'd rather nest in lawns and urban areas than make homes out in the wilderness. "Individually, these are like the ordinary black ants you find in your garden," explains entomologist Bill Hargesse, of New Orleans. "But their behavior makes them uniquely dangerous pests." Unlike other ants. Lasius neglectus creates "supercolonies," vast swarms of more than 110 million insects. Hordes of tiny black bodies create linked networks of nests that stretch for miles, hidden under lawns or inside walls. Their numbers are so large, they can clog machinery, chew through heavy electrical wiring, fill switches and block plumbing fixtures. And anyone unlucky enough to stumble onto one of their nests will know it in seconds. "When I saw this ant for the first time, I simply could not believe there could be so many garden ants in the same lawn," says Professor Jacobus Boomsma, one of the researchers who discovered Lasius neglectus. Scientists believe the super-ants came from Turkey, but since 2000, it has spread to 108 locations in 15 countries. In one day, a single queen can produce 20 eggs - and a single supercolony can have as many as 350,000 queens constantly adding to their numbers. Once established, a supercolony - which can consist of 1,000 linked nests - is nearly impossible to eradicate, experts say. Kill one nest, and 10 more grow to take its place. "Most invasive ant species are kept in check by cold winters, which limits them to spreading through tropical or subtropical zones," Hargesse explains. "But thanks to our changing climate and their natural ruggedness, these ants can form supercolonies in any city in the world." "The potential for disaster if they spread into New York's subways or Chicago's high rises is enormous."

Beer Bottle Note Discovery Picture A message in a bottle tossed into the Atlantic off the New Jersey coast has washed ashore 400 miles south and 39 years later! Vacationer Mark Ciarmello, of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, and his 3-year-old daughter recently discovered the sealed Schaefer beer bottle as they strolled along the beach in Corolla, North Carolina. The cryptic note inside, dated August 17, 1969, reads: "If found, notify the North Haledon Fire Co. 2." Ciarmello called and then e-mailed pictures of the bottle to the Jersey firefighters. Veterans at the station believe it was thrown into the ocean during one of the fishing trips they used to take back in the '60s.

Amazing Armless Pilot Picture Jessica Cox is an accomplished young woman who's earned a black belt in Tae Kwan-Do, a bachelor's degree in psychology and a licensed as an airplane pilot. Oh, and one other thing. She has no arms! That's right. The beautiful 25-year-old from Tucson, Arizona, was born with bilateral congenital limb deficiency, and she's achieved or supassed all her goals. Her latest amazing feat with her feet is to become the first woman without arms to earn a license to fly small planes. Cox hopes to inspire others to follow her lead into the wide blue yonder. "I highly encourage people with disabilities to consider flying," she says. "It helps reverse the stereotype that people with disabilities are powerless into the belief that they're powerful and capable of setting high goals and achieving them." Cox, who also gives motivational speeches, says doctors were never able to pinpoint the reason for her birth defect. But instead of going the typical route of using prosthetic devices, the determined girl chose to deal with her disability without mechanical help. "Instead of investing so much time in being normal, I realized it was more important to celebrate my difference," she explains. From early childhood, she's trained her feet to work like a pair of hands, and she's been so successful that a recent X-ray showed her toe joints looked more like fingers! The main stumbling blocks have been people who believe her lack of limbs makes her dreams impossible. "The mind is more powerful than physical infirmities," Cox delcares. "Anything physical is not my challenge. It's people who think I'm disabled. They don't need to pity me." In fact, there's not much the vivacious woman can't do with her talented toes. She drives a car, types 25 words per minute, pumps gas, puts her contact lenses in place, answers her cell phone and uses the ATM machine, punching in her PIN number with her pedicured tootsies. "Jessica's showing people there are no limits," says Cox' flight instructor, Parrish Traweek. "Jessica's incredible. She really is."

Bee Inspired Tire Design Picture The Pentagon is going to outfit Humvees and other armored vehicles with a revolutionary tire - and the designers freely admit they stole the idea from bees. The tire is modeled on the six-side cell honey-comb pattern bees use to build their hives. It requires no air, so it can't go flat and strand troops in the middle of enemy fire. It can withstand high-powered bullets and the explosive force of roadside bombs and enable soldiers to drive to safety when the going gets tough. The tire is the brainchild of engineers at the University of Wisconsin and Resilient Technologies, a company based in Wasusau.

SG Blocks! Video The next generation of houses will be built from old shipping crates, saving the buyer a ton of money and sparing the environment from unsightly pollution. Construction company SG Blocks - the "S" stands for "safe" and the "G" stands for "green" - has partnered with Con Global Industries, America's biggest shipping operator, to recycle the containers into stylish new homes. The crates have a lifespan of about 15 years when used to ship cargo around the world. Rather than just throw them away to rust and decay and foul the countryside, they'll be used as "building blocks" to contruct affordable and environmentally friendly housing. Each crate is 40 feet long, 8 feet wide and 10 feet tall. The builders have used five of them, artistically welded together to create a 1,700 square-foor model home with spacious rooms, balconies and terraces. It will cost about $100 a quare foot to build a crate house, compared to $300 to $400 for a conventionally designed home.

Big Donation Still Ends In Fire Picture Philanthropist Annemarie Geckeler donated $65,000 to her local volunteer fire department for a new engine - only to watch her multimillion-dollar mansion burn to the ground soon afterward. Alan Fraser, of the Wartburg Fire Brigade in Queensland, Australia, says the searing heat of the flames, which were started by an electrical short, prevented firefighters from reaching the only source of water. By the time a tanker arrived, the home was totally engulfed. "It was going from one end to the other," Fraser explains. "We never had a hope in hell." Geckler is known throughout the community for her generous donations, including thousands of dollars she's given to the local school. "She's just such a generous lady, and everyone is rallying around her," Fraser says.
