A prescription for Prozac was just what the doctor ordered for a parrot who was so heartbroken by the death of his owner that he pulled out all his neck feathers.
Fred, an African Grey, was George Dance's pride and joy, and the man and his bird were perfect companions for many years.
Then George, of Somerset County, New Jersey, passed away, and his sudden disappearance threw Fred into a depression so profound that the lively parrot fell silent.
Day after day, he sat on his perch, bobbing his head up and down while yanking out feathers from his chin to his wings.
It took daily doses of Prozac, a powerful anti-depressant, to boost the spirits of the grieving bird.
In fact, pharmaceutical companies are reporting a sharp rise in the dispensing of anti-depressants to animals, with parrots at the top of the list of creatures needing help.
"These birds are particularly sensative to the loss of their owners," explains veterinarian Claude Treat. "Besides grieving like humans when a loved one is lost, the parrot also doesn't understand why their person dropped out of sight."
"Fortunately, Fred has perked up since he started receiving the Prozac, and his feathers should grow back in no time."

An enterprising engineer has broken the world record by creating a squashed car that, at only 19 inches high, is the flattest vehicle on Earth.
"I've been building crazy cars since 1984, when I built a 9-foot tall vehicle," boasts Perry Watkins, of Buckingham, England.
Watkins designed his latest creation using the shells of two vintage Hillman Imp cars powered by a jet engine that thrusts the vehicle to speeds over 100 mph.
The low-slung contraption was then given a custom paint job and distinctive fins to make it resemble the famous Batmobile.
Watkins claims his squat roadster will eventually be street legal, but he admits its driver must think defensively.
"It handles fine but it's only got a 6-inch steering wheel, so it's a bit stiff," he says. "You've got to be wary of speed bumps, and other drivers look at you instead of the road."
One-Legged Outrun!
A prisoner got the jump on three slow-moving guards when he sprinted to freedom - even though he 's only got one leg!
The burglary suspect had his limb amputated after a dog attack. Because he relied on a prosthesis and crutches to walk, guards didn't bother cuffing him as they escorted him from a courthouse in West London, England.
Instead of waiting to be transported to jail, the man ditched his crutches, ran 200 yards, climbed a 5-foot wall and disappeared into an apartment block.
"I couldn't believe it when I heard he had a false leg," says one guard who witnessed the speedy escape. "He was like a sprinter in the Paralympics."
"The guards are fat and smoke too much, so they couldn't catch him."
Officials have promised to conduct a formal investigation.

Female macaque monkeys are so much like humans that they even love to gossip, says new research.
Animal experts discovered that grunts, coos and other chit-chatty noises were made between females 13 times more often than males made similar sounds.
Girls were also more likely to "talk" to girls rather than to boys. Scientists believe these female friendships are lifelong bonds, and participants rely on one another for such important tasks as looking after each other's offspring.
This is the first time communication differences between sexes have been identified in non-human subjects.
"In all social species, communication helped individuals navigate their daily social lives, usually by influencing the minds and behavior of group members," says primate expert Klaus Zuberbuhler, of University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

It Just So Happens That Football Is Coming To India!

As I was looking over some sports news I came across a thread on a new professional football league that was starting up. Naturally I just had to take a look at the website and see what it was all about. Well it seems pretty cool and I wish it the best of luck because I enjoy myself a good football game and I'm sure at least a few Indians can get on board with this fun and unique sport.
It is called the EFLI which stands for Elite Football League of India (http://www.efli.com/) and it is set to start in fall 2012. You can see the names and locations in the picture above or click the link above which ever is there. Their website is still being worked on but it already looks better than half the other start up league websites I've seen. I look forward to following how this league comes together.
